Swedish Hunting Association Granted Permit to Collect Capercaillie Eggs

A unique project based outside Nyköping is set to gather capercaillie eggs from abandoned nests across Sweden. The overarching goal of the initiative is to raise the hatched birds in order to study them in a controlled setting.

In Sweden, taking wild eggs from nature is generally illegal under environmental regulations. However, the Swedish Association for Hunting and Wildlife Management, known as Svenska Jägareförbundet, was granted a special exemption permit specifically for this research project.

The collected eggs will be brought to the location near Nyköping from various parts of the country. By raising the capercaillies following their collection, researchers will have the opportunity to study the birds closely and gather scientific observations.

This effort marks a unique study permitted in Sweden, focusing exclusively on capercaillie eggs retrieved from nests that have been abandoned in the wild.
